“Close-up” – the name of this series from the Mercedes-Benz Museum says it all. Each instalment tells surprising, exciting and interesting stories about vehicles from the exhibition. In the spotlight this time: the Mercedes-Benz C 32 AMG Official FIA F1® Medical Car from the 203 model series in Collection Room 3: Gallery of Helpers.

Conspicuous helper: Striking decals, warning beacons on the roof and a powerful presence. Clearly, this is no ordinary Mercedes-Benz C 32 AMG (203 model series). This high-performance estate car was built for a very special purpose. It is the original FIA Medical Car for Formula 1® from 2001 to 2003. Mercedes-AMG has been supplying this support vehicle for the pinnacle of motorsport since 1996 – marking 30 years now.

Specialists: The names of the crew at the time are written on the side windows of the Medical Car. Racing driver Jacques Tropenat at the wheel, beside him neurosurgeon Sid Watkins, who was also FIA Safety and Medical Delegate at the time, and in the rear right was his deputy, anaesthetist and emergency physician Gary Hartstein. The seat behind the driver is usually occupied by a local emergency doctor from the race track, as he has precise knowledge of the rescue chain there.

Essential part of the system: The Medical Car represents an indispensable part of Formula 1® that rarely takes centre stage: rapid assistance when every second counts. In this function, it is an elementary component of the FIA safety concept. As the first link in the rescue chain, it brings emergency medical personnel to the scene of an accident on the circuit as quickly as possible for the initial assessment and stabilisation of injured racing drivers. This clearly distinguishes the Medical Car from the Official FIA F1® Safety Car, which Mercedes-AMG has also been providing for 30 years. Performance with responsibility: The FIA Medical Car must be stable, predictable and safe to drive in all conditions. After all, it can only fulfil its mission of rapid first aid if it reaches its destination quickly and safely. The C 32 AMG is ideal for this. And that’s why it has a professional driver at the wheel. In a narrow sports bucket seat and secured with a four-point harness, the driver becomes one with the car. The front passenger has an AMG sports seat – not quite as close-fitting but still very supportive during dynamic driving. The front and rear passengers are also secured with four-point harnesses.

Direct access: The emergency physicians have their equipment for rapid interventions immediately to hand – sometimes even tucked into their racing overalls or in a small bag at their feet. Additional equipment for resuscitation, medical monitoring and fire accidents is carried in a variable load container in the luggage area of the estate car. Fire extinguishers are also on board in case flames need to be extinguished. This equipment is used to provide first aid before ambulances and recovery vehicles arrive at the scene of the accident.

Special features: The switches for operating the warning beacons on the roof are located in the centre console of the Medical Car. The light-alloy wheels are shod with MICHELIN “Pilot Sport” tyres: ideal for fast driving on a race track. Closer inspection reveals the inscription “Extraload” on the tyres – this is the reinforced version with a higher load capacity.

Ambience: The other interior features of the Medical Car, such as the trim made of carbon fibre or soft leather, correspond to the standard version of the C 32 AMG. With the exception of the carpet in the front passenger footwell: the embroidered “S. Watkins” is a special tribute to “Professor Sid”, often simply called “Prof”. As President of the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety, he played a key role in developing the concept of the Medical Car. For 26 years, the chief physician accompanied countless Formula 1® races and initiated life-saving measures for many drivers after serious accidents.

A powerpack with a specific function: The start is always a critical phase of a Formula 1® race. This is where incidents can very easily occur. That is why the Medical Car directly follows the field for the first lap. During the race, the Official FIA F1® Medical Car remains ready for action in the pit lane, next to the Safety Car. If Race Control gives the signal over the radio, it takes to the track to reach the scene of the accident as fast as possible.

AMG provides the basis: This role requires a powerful vehicle with space for the driver, several doctors and their emergency equipment. The C 32 AMG in the estate version is therefore ideal as the Medical Car. The fast estate car combines a generous amount of space with very agile driving dynamics. The vehicle is powered by the supercharged 3.2-litre M 112 E 32 ML AMG engine. It has an output of 260 kW (354 hp) and develops a maximum torque of 450 newton metres. This made the C 32 AMG the most powerful variant of the C-Class at the time, with a top speed of 280 km/h. At the same time, it was exclusive: only 1,556 units were produced between 2001 and 2004. It was followed by the C 55 AMG with a V8 engine.

Motorsport with humanity: Mercedes-AMG has provided the Official FIA F1® Safety Cars and Medical Cars for Formula 1® since 1996. The C 32 AMG as a Medical Car occupies a special place in this history. It stands for an era in which the safety aspect became increasingly professionalised in top-class sport, with specialised emergency vehicles becoming a natural part of the racing action. The fast estate car shows a side of Formula 1® that is not aimed at victory and fractions of a second, but at responsibility, a speedy response and the protection of people. This makes it an extraordinary piece of Formula 1® history – and an impressive example of how closely performance and safety go hand in hand at Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG.
